Finding your path

Sam Colby, LCSW offers individual therapy as well as clinical supervision, remotely in the state of California. Through deep and authentic collaboration with you, I am able to provide a safe space for growth and discovery in your journey.

Expert Clinical Support

I am a licensed clinical social worker with over ten years of experience in the mental health field. After graduating from Portland State University with an MSW in 2020, I have worked providing individual therapy services in a variety of settings and to diverse populations, which has addeed invaluably to my  broad perspective of the human experience.  I bring a deep commitment to social justice values and awareness to my practice, and will honor your identities and their intersections.

As a holder of multiple LGBTQIA+ identities, I find myself particularly passionate about working with members of our resilient community. I am also a great fit for anyone wanting someone to hold space for their unique experiences, and support as they walk their path through life. I am non-judgemental, empathetic, intelligent, insightful, genuine and authentic, and I bring all those aspects of myself to my work. I have an extensive background in trauma work, and am also trained in Brainspotting, a somatic trauma processing tool which I have found to be a powerful in shifting the way trauma sits in our minds and bodies.

Processing Trauma

Brainspotting aND more

When we experience trauma, our system is too overwhelmed to process information the way it usually does. Instead of integrating everything, the brain and body store fragments of the experience to try to keep you safe in the future. When these fragments are activated, they cause trauma symptoms.

I am able to utilize a few different methods of re-processing of traumatic experiences, such that the fragments are able to break down and flow and integrate. I utilize both traditional talk therapy methods, and a somatic processing practice called Brainspotting. This tool helps process trauma by targeting the relationship between eye position and brain functioning/processing to shift/release the physical trauma stored in the body and brain, allowing for a deeper, healthier, more holistic understanding of your full life story.
